Overview

At a web agency, I worked as a UI Designer on a messaging app for home caretakers, collaborating closely with a UX Designer and the Chief Product Owner. Caretakers previously had no dedicated messaging system, making communication and scheduling slow, fragmented, and error-prone. I focused on creating clear, intuitive interfaces that enabled fast, reliable communication, simplified scheduling, and supported smooth day-to-day workflows for caregivers and their teams.

Business Goal

Provide caretakers and patients with a quick, seamless communication solution to improve efficiency, reduce task delays, and minimize user frustration.

Outcome

We launched a messaging app with intuitive desktop and mobile versions for iOS and Android. We created a user-friendly, efficient platform that made communication fast and effortless for caretakers and patients.

Improved communication between caretakers and patients by enabling clear, direct messaging to ensure information is shared effectively.
Direct messaging supported timely and informed decisions by providing relevant information at the right moment to guide actions.
Reduced miscommunication and errors by using clear interfaces and structured messaging to prevent confusion.

Design Process

UX Research

I reviewed UX research and user insights from caretakers, coordinators, and families to understand key needs like fast communication, clarity, accessibility, and keeping cognitive load low during busy shifts.

Team Alignment

I collaborated with the UX Designer to confirm flows, information architecture, and core interactions, while also syncing with the Chief Product Owner on scope, priorities, and success criteria.

Design Solutions

Announcements

To improve team communication and ensure critical information reached everyone efficiently, I designed the announcements feature. A centralized space for sharing important updates, reminders, and changes with the entire caregiving team. This reduces the chances of missed messages or fragmented communication, ensuring everyone is on the same page.

Message States

I designed the messaging system to clearly show the status of each message. Messages can be sent, received, read, or edited, so it was important to create a structure that reflects these states visually and functionally.

Mobile Design

I designed a clean, intuitive messaging interface for iOS and Android to help users stay connected and work efficiently. The chat layout clearly showed message bubbles, timestamps, and status indicators, while navigation was streamlined with easy access to compose messages, attach files, and adjust settings.

Insights

Working on this messaging app taught me a lot about designing for mobile-first, cross-platform experiences on both iOS and Android. With no existing messaging system in place, I learned how important it is to create clear, intuitive interfaces that allow users to communicate quickly and manage schedules efficiently. Collaborating closely with a UX Designer and the Chief Product Owner reinforced the value of aligning on user needs and business goals while iterating rapidly.
